Northern Brewer hops were made famous by their use in California Common beer where they were known to impart a woodsy, almost minty flavor. As is the case with many great hop varieties, our constant enthusiasm for new hop flavors and new beer styles has greatly reduced the creative use Northern Brewer hops. We thought they deserved a 2nd opinion. Amarillo and a Azacca join the dance ticket in this light, easy drinking IPA, layering a hint of citrus, and bold tropical mango and guava aromas over the minty resin of the Northern Brewer.

Broken Boundary Brewery - A Little Respect
Style: American IPA

We’re showing A Little Respect for the forgotten aspect of hops... the dank, resinous, bittering qualities that the West Coast of the US highlighted for over a decade. Step right up to remember that long, slow finishing bitter beer that allows you to savor the long lasting flavor of evergreen forests and ripe grapefruit zest well after your last sip. To show respect for the elder generations of hops, we selected some standout hop varieties from 3 different decades. Galena was the bittering superstar hop of the 80’s. Centennial was part of the “4-C’s” that made West Coast IPA’s famous, and Amarillo was (and is) one of best aromatic hops of the oughts. We made this beer to show a little respect to these great hop varieties.

Broken Boundary Brewery - Bittersweet Zymurgy
Style: Extra Special Bitter
ABV: 5.00%

This easy summer drinker is loaded with Maris Otter malt for a satisfying body and traditional English Fuggles hops for an almost spicy bitter finish. Perfect for the beach or crushing a couple around the hibachi. Also, I've casually known Sheldon for a long time now, and he's always interested in ESB's. Buuuuuuuut, I don't know how to get a hold of him. I hope you get the word Sheldon.

Broken Boundary Brewery - Bread Pudding
Style: Malt Beer
ABV: 6.80% IBU: 8.0

Here come the malts. 6 of ‘em in this liquid love poem brewed as an ode to one of our favorite desserts. We nearly eliminated the bitterness while employing the versatile aromatics of Sabro hops to add their alluring blend of dark chocolate and pineapple aromas to the back end of the flavor palate. 20 pounds of Indian Jaggery strengthen the brew for the traditional English Ale yeast that leaves plenty of residual sweetness. On this loaf of sweet bready goodness, we layered up organic Ceylon cinnamon and vanilla, then topped it off with the maple flavor of fenugreek. Get me some ice cream already. It’s time for dessert!

Style: American Porter

Porters. What can you say man? It’s almost impossible to find a porter that isn’t carrying some kind of baggage. Coconut. Molasses. Peanut Butter. Chocolate. Mint?!?. Our boy is sick of carrying bags and has gotten a little roasty about it. This is a porter that stands on it’s own. We rounded out the traditional malt with a kiss of Honey Malt and a dash of Rye, to reflect the feisty attitude of a porter who doesn’t need to carry any bags to get the job done.

Style: New England IPA
ABV: 7.30% IBU: 12.0

This one’s for those who get after it. You know who you are… the ones who won’t let your dreams slip out of your sights because you know you might not find your way back to them; the ones who know that what we did yesterday doesn’t mean as much as what we do today; those who grab something sweet when your palate’s gone bitter, and the ones who move fast enough to keep the golden glowing sunset on the horizon. We loaded this beer with Citra, Azacca and Centennial hops during fermentation for a tropical citrus flavor with hints of mango and papaya. It tastes like the perfect Hawaiian sunset we all chase after. Drink one. Then get after it! Contains Lactose.

This little red love machine won’t slow you down at a sessionable 4%. We used 2 kinds of ginger to bounce a little zing off of the roasty malt and noble hop bitterness; Fresh Mango ginger from our friends at De La Mesa Farms in Waimanalo offers a subdued spiciness that arrives late to the party, while a modest amount of culinary ginger supports a balanced aroma profile and gives a subtle heat to the mix.

Broken Boundary Brewery - Jean Claude Van Blonde
Style: Belgian Blonde
ABV: 7.20% IBU: 21.0

Brewed with authentic ingredients from the Old Country and our best approximation of Belgian brewing techniques. This brute is dominated by pilsner malts and step mashed to unleash their potential. A healthy dose of Saaz hops gives those malts a balanced counterpoint. But the magic here is in the yeast. We restrained it’s growth by holding it at a low temperature for a week before unleashing the ester potential in the strain by rising it in steps. What you get is a solid malt backbone that is both dry and sweet, acting as a platform for this Belgian yeast strain to dance its delicious dance.

Broken Boundary Brewery - Lolly & the Popsicles
Style: American IPA
ABV: 5.70% IBU: 8.0

We put together the greatest band of all time (stay with me, it’s a metaphor). You’ve got the ambiguously attractive lead singer (malty backbone) with a voice that is sweet like tropical fruit (HUGE dry-hop additions) with an understated gravelly harmony (subtle…. VEEEEERY subtle hop bitterness). A billowing percussive head (carbonated just enough to play your tongue like a high hat) and a sexy sweet set of back-up singing dancers (lactose, lactose, and a little more lactose) linking the whole thing together.

This beer is loaded with citrus aroma, and the juicy flavor fights a determined fight through the resinous background and Malty backbone of this deceptively 9% beer. JCVB is great, but no beer is Above The Law. Don’t get us wrong, the JCVB isn’t Marked For Death or On Deadly Ground, but it’s status as our #1 Belgian is Under Siege.

Broken Boundary Brewery - Sucker Punch
Style: India Pale Ale
ABV: 5.80% IBU: 65.0

We loaded this Sucker up with Centennial and Glacier Hops in the beginning of the boil, then tried to tame it with aromatic additions of Amarillo, Azacca, and a heavy dry hop dose of Citra and Simcoe. It didn’t work. Untamable. The aroma makes you think this is going to be some smooth East Coast number, but it isn’t. Our yeast worked overtime trying to dry this beer out, and the effort helps the bitterness sing clear through the palate on this one, beginning, middle, end, end, end… it doesn’t really end. This one’s for the bitter beer lover out there.

Broken Boundary Brewery - Sweet Malt & Crisp Sunshine
Style: Czech Pilsner
ABV: 4.80% IBU: 39.0

I’ve never been to Bohemia. But in my mind, it smells like this beer... sweet malt and late afternoon sunshine in a cool breeze. The flavor is crisp, followed by hop bitterness that threatens to overwhelm the malt, but doesn’t quite. It’s like a kick in the pants that demands that we pay attention to the beer that took over the world.

Broken Boundary Brewery - Vinspiration
Style: Altbier
ABV: 4.30% IBU: 35.0

The good brewers of Dusseldorf refused to acquiesce to the dominating march of lager yeasts in the 19th century, and instead cajoled their top fermenting ale yeasts into a cold temperature performance. What you get is a beer that balances a well rounded breadiness with a spicy hop bitterness accented by nutty flavors and a kiss of cherry flavored esters.
