The ash tree has long been a staple of the Iowa and England landscape. In fact, the tree’s common name comes from Old English aesc. Today Iowa loves its ash trees so much it’s waging war on the emerald ash bore, a beetle which has decimating ash populations elsewhere. Don’t be misled by “bitter” in the name. Style: Rye IPA

This distinctive brew honors our distinctive Eastern Black Rhinoceros friends at Des Moines’ Blank Park Zoo, Ayana and Kiano, who love playing with an empty Confluence keg that we gave them as a toy. Our simple malt recipe includes at least 20% rye malt for a light rye/spicy flavor and Victory malt that adds a nutty/roasty taste to balance the profile. Simcoe and Nugget hops provide bittering. The beer’s higher alcohol content is perceived as sweet and offsets some of the bitter, making its 82 IBU rating very deceptive. Mandarina Bavaria and Crystal hops add a fruity/citrusy flavor. Ayana means “beautiful flower” in Kiswahili. Just be careful: unlike its 2400-pound rhino namesake, this 8.8 ABV beautiful flower of a beer can sneak up on you.

Confluence presents their Rock Dodger Imperial double India pale ale except it has been barrel aged in rum barrels! Rock Dodger is Des Moines, Iowa salute to the many beer-loving bicyclists across Iowa. The result is a beer in which the sweet malt is balanced by moderate bitterness and infused with tropical and citrus fruit flavor and aroma. For a big ABV double IPA that’s as smooth as a freshly paved bike path, try Rock Dodger drowned in rum flavors!

Named after Confluence Brewing Company’s neighbor, Gray’s Lake, Nessie features a bill of English Golden Promise malt almost as massive as the enormous Loch Ness itself. English East Kent Golding balances the sweetness and cool fermenting with Scottish ale yeast completes the transformation of Nessie from a terrifyingly boiling monster into a beloved Scottish ale friend.

Confluence Brewing Co. - Barrel Aged Kiano's Cut

Style: New England Double IPA

Our company was built on the ingenuity of a homebrewer with a passion for experimentation and a deep appreciation for tradition. Near the end of 2018, we released our 1,000th batch of beer and our first hazy double IPA. Since we had such a great time with that beer, we decided we didn't need a fancy number like 1,000 to justify playing around with hops, malt, and yeast like we were homebrewing again. Two ale yeast strains duke it out in the fermenter to produce this triple dry-hopped, hazy, blond, double IPA packed with 007, Lotus, and Styrian Wolf hops. Look for bright aromas and flavors of orange, passion fruit, strawberries and cream with a dank resinous undercurrent, all wrapped up in a sticky malty body with soft mouthfeel

Confluence Brewing Co. - Blue Corn Lager

It seems natural for Iowa-based Confluence to offer a corn-based brew. We use open-pollinated, heritage organic blue corn grown in New Mexico. We add enough Saaz hops for bittering without overwhelming the blue corn flavor. It’s then fermented with German lager yeast and lagered as normal. The resulting beer is big for its style and refreshing on warm days with higher alcohol content than the classic American pilsner.

This German-inspired black lager (not brewed to a particular style) is delicious, rich and smoky. It’s brewed with pilsner, Munich and Vienna malts as well as several medium and dark caramel malts, and debittered black malt for depth of color and complexity of flavor. Noble German hops balance the rich malt flavors. Like a perfect campfire, this black lager offers a pleasant hint of smoke that’s not overpowering.

When most people think of Iowa, they picture flowing fields of grain for miles and miles. Created by a third-generation farm boy, Farmer John’s Multi-Grain Ale is amber waves of grain in a glass. A refreshing, blonde ale, it features a base of two row American barley malt along with a large portion of wheat malt, a small dose of rye malt and un-malted oats, corn and wheat. Lightly hopped with English East Kent Goldings hops chosen for their subtle, earthy qualities and finished with Czech Saaz hops for their sweet, floral essence to create a beer that’s light in body and color, with a velvety texture and an aroma as sweet as a freshly cut field of hay. Spring is truly a time of rebirth in the agrarian state of Iowa. The season lifts spirits out of the winter doldrums and sends farmers back into the fields full of optimism for a new crop. Spring is also a great time to take a refreshing break from the heavy, high-alcohol winter brews. Fresh Start is part of a new trend that takes an age-old pale ale recipe and lagers it, creating a lighter, crisper beer that still has some hop bite to it. Pilsen, Vienna and Caramel 10L malts create a lightly sweet malt profile that is beautifully balanced with Amarillo and Crystal hops. The light citrus and subtle grass flavors from the hops remind us of the eagerly awaited spring.

Imogene, Iowa, is quintessential Iowa — a tiny town founded by an Irish immigrant group to support a patchwork of farms that surrounded it. Our Imogene Red is a tribute to the thousands of small towns that dot Iowa. It was created by head brewer John Martin in memory of his grandmother, Frances Jane Dempsey Martin, who died in November 2012 after living all 98 of her years in and around Imogene. Made with English Maris Otter two-row malt, English East Kent Golding hops, and Irish ale yeast, Imogene Red has the color, clarity, aroma and flavor of a classic Irish ale. Irish reds are a smooth favorite for malty beer fans. Raise a pint in memory of Grandma Martin and in tribute to small-town Iowa.

Saison Des Moines was created by our farm-boy-turned-head-brewer, John Martin, as a homage to the simple-but-elegant Saison DuPont. It’s built on Belgian pilsner malt and flaked wheat with east Kent Golding, Motueka and Citra hops plus French Saison yeast. This very effervescent brew has a light banana aroma with medium body that’s well attenuated, dry and fruity, with a pepper and clove aroma and flavor and a very slightly sour finish. Original Saison was very low alcohol, but ours packs a 7.5% ABV, so finish your chores before enjoying some!

Confluence Brewing Co. - The Wizard
Style: Gose-Sour
ABV: 3.90%

When humans first began brewing beer, the science behind fermentation was not well understood and probably seemed a bit like magic. We now know that around 1000 AD in Goslar, in present-day Germany, lactic producing bacteria from the grain and air combined with the salinity of their local water source to help the brewers produce a tart, refreshing brew that we call Gose (GO-zuh). In conjuring up a plan for this beer, we honored that natural sort of magic by culturing lactobacillus organically from our grain to quickly sour a whole batch of beer. The resulting brew retains the magic of the original, with a citrus-like tartness and minerality that awakens and refreshes your palate with each sip. Style: Black IPA / Cascadian Dark Ale

Confluence Brewery is located on Thomas Beck Road, which is named after an English immigrant who developed extensive (but now long abandoned) coal mine holdings in Des Moines, including some near our brewery. The dark color comes from black wheat, which is combined with two-row base malt and a good portion of caramel malt and some flaked rye to add a subtle dry, spiciness. Don’t let the color fool you, this dark beer is not roasty or stout-like. We used a special blend of hops, including Nelson Sauvin from Australia, to give it a unique flavor and aroma profile completely distinct from its India Pale Ale cousin, Des Moines IPA

A bigger, bolder version our Oktoberfest beer, Weather Beacon Red signals warmer days ahead with a rich, complex, medium-toasted malt flavor, a touch of residual sweetness, and deceptively high alcohol content. It’s made with German Vienna and Munich malts, premium domestic Pilsner malt, and four specialty cara-malts for color, finished with German hops, and fermented with German lager yeast.

Confluence Brewing Co. - Weis Grip
Style: Hefeweizen
ABV: 5.80% IBU: 17.0

The German pronunciation of “weiss” sounds like English “vice.” And, like its namesake tool, the idea of producing a classic German wheat beer (weissbier) took a hold of Confluence cellarman Kent Middendorf and wouldn’t let go. After Kent did the initial research and homebrewed trial batches, he and head brewer John Martin collaborated to select a malt bill of 50% German pils and 50% malted wheat, with a little CaraMunich for a touch of color and flavor enhancement, and German noble hops (tettnanger). Traditional German-style hefeweizen yeast added flavors of clove, banana and bubble gum. The “hefe" prefix means "with yeast,” hence Weiss Grip’s unfiltered, hazy, orange color. Try our version of this popular warm weather thirst quencher.
