The malt presence in Haven is slightly sweet from the small amounts of British Pale, Vienna and Caramel 60 malts, this beer is far from malty. As you would expect from a Foothills IPA, this brew is medium bodied and dry. The blend of German Tradition hops with the Citra emphasize the lemon zest side of the Citra. Aroma is all Citra, showcasing a generally citrus character emphasizing lemon but with a tinge of grapefruit.

This month we Rock The Kazbek – a hybrid hop bred from the popular Czech Saaz, and wild hops that grow in the Caucasus Mountains (at the base of, surprise, Mt. Kazbek). This hop conveys the mild nature of its Saaz ancestry, but with some spice and earthiness – dare we say wildness? – from its free-grown parentage. It’s the perfect hop to kick up this Czech-style pilsner.

Nice synergy between the lemon of the Sorachi Ace and the orange / citrus of the Simcoe. The German Tradition throws a nice earthiness to the flavor and the base of Amarillo first wort pulls it all together. Malt, as usual with these, is the canvas that the hops are painted on, so it's obviously in the background. It does lend an extremely complimentary sweetness, though. Good way to (hopefully) round off the hot weather and start working our way into fall.

So used to royal treatment is our June IPA dog that he’s nicknamed “Prince Wally”. Like any good California native, Wally’s most at home at the beach – chasing birds and testing the ocean water just in case it’s not salty this time. A dog this regal deserves a correspondingly majestic IPA full of experimental hops with tropical and citrus notes aplenty. See you at the beach, Wally.

Foothills Brewing Co. - IPA of the Month: April (Finley)
Style: IPA
ABV: 6.60% IBU: 74.0

This one is sort of a bowl of fruit. The Horizon lends a some plum, the Amarillo some clean, generic citrus, the Calypso some pear, 05256 tangerine and the Simcoe some orange/citrus. What we ended up with was all the above with even some hints of Honeydew in there. Malts are accentuating this all with a nice, underlying sweetness.

Murphy is a Boston terrier mix whose owners are musicians: his beer is a melodic mix of hops, starting with German Tradition and finishing with a big citrusy kick from Citra and Lemondrop.
