Mike Hess Brewing - 40Acre

Back in 1893, the Hartley family purchased forty acres of land (the site of modern North Park) north of Balboa Park to plant a lemon grove. Our 40 Acre IPA is a nod to the Hartley’s foresight and we celebrate the hop harvest each year with this beer, featuring fresh, wet hops. Rejoice, hoplovers these hops have not been dried nor pelletized, but come to our brewery straight from the bine and directly into our brew kettles. Cue the mouth-watering—this beer has acres of flavor. 2014 batch features 60 kilos each of Chinook and Meridian.

Coffee Grazias has a creamy, smooth texture, and the malt contributes chocolate, vanilla and slightly toasted flavors that play off the German hops for a sublime flavor and a surprisingly dark color. This particular batch includes coffee for a more roasted flavor which compliments the light sweetness of the cream ale. Nitrogen is added for a smoother and creamier mouthfeel.

This high alcohol, highly hopped barley king is a rare treat. Made with 100% barley, meaning no adjunct sugars. It is malty, hoppy and strong. We only managed to brew 25 gallons of this beer due to its large grain bill and extended boil down. Coming in at 133 IBUs to balance the high malt bill it is a pleasant drinking experience.

Pershing Avenue was built on an old wagon trail used to haul water up to a lemon grove the Hartley family was cultivating on a 40-acre patch of land that would become North Park. Pershing Pils is a traditional, old German-style lager beer. This style, originally brewed for miners looking to unwind after a day in the mines, has no fruity or other esters—just straight pilsner malt and noble hops in the aroma and flavor. It’s a crisp, light bodied and refreshing way to relax, no matter what line of work you’re in.
